shagrugShag is typically used to make deep-pile carpets. This is the oldest use of the term. Shag carpet is sometimes evoked as an example of the aesthetic from the culture of the 1970s in the United States. Shag is also used to make carpets for mariners.

Shag rugs are currently enjoying a new popularity due to the current sense of retro fashion that is taking the home décor market by storm.  It’s not tacky or wacky – it’s eccentric and cool.

Down pillows are luxurious, but they also require special care. The rule of thumb is: While this may be a nightmare for OCD sufferers or hypochondriacs, the rule of thumb is: The less often you clean your down bedding, the longer it will last. All you need to do is follow the steps to ensure continually comfy nights with a reliable down pillow.

• Cover your pillow with a pillow case at all times. This will keep your pillow free from dust, dirt and body oils.

• Buy a pillow cover with a zipper for an extra layer of protection under your pillow case. This will also help those who have allergies.

• Clean the pillow cover and case regularly to keep your pillow fresh.

• Launder or dry-clean your pillow yearly.

• Spot-treat any stains before you wash your pillow if you’re going to machine wash it.

• Wash the pillow in cold water using a detergent that has a degreaser so that oils are removed. Follow the pillow manufacturer’s instructions for specific detergents to use.

• Very gently squeeze out any excess water from the pillow after washing.

• Dry the pillow with the dryer set on its lowest setting; put a tennis ball in with the pillow so that the fill moves as it dries.

• Store your pillow in a dry and well-ventilated closet or room when you are not using it, in order to avoid mildew.

handymanCalling a handyman every time something around the house breaks down can quickly become a pricy endeavor. For that reason, it’s a major benefit to learn your way around a set of power tools. You don’t have to become an expert at carpentry or anything that extreme, but it will prove helpful if you can mend small projects around the house without calling for help. Many people, however, find that they have problems both inside and outside the house.

To that end, some things break down in the garage or in the backyard, which is why cordless tools are so convenient. These tools run on rechargeable batteries rather than AC power, and a set usually includes everything from cordless drills to cordless sanders. For extended projects, make sure you have spare rechargeable batteries, as charging your one battery could take well over an hour. If you feel switching out batteries would be a hassle, look into “Rapid Charge Batteries.” These can charge in as little as ten minutes.

Caring For Your Comforter

A comforter is a common piece of bedding which most closely resembles a kind of blanket. Their main purpose is to keep the sleeper warm, but they are often slept on in order to offer an added layer of padding to the mattress. For added convenience when purchasing, comforters are retailed in standard bed sizing, so you can choose a twin, full, queen, king, or California king. However, they are typically slightly larger than sheets using these standard sizes to accommodate extra draping over the side of the bed.

If you purchase a high quality option, it can definitely be an investment. With that in mind, maintain the integrity of the comforter by covering it in a duvet cover. A duvet cover is easier to clean than the entire comforter itself, and these covers stop surface stains from collecting on the comforter. If you do want to wash your comforter, however, make sure to play close attention to the washing instructions. Especially down comforters can contain special stipulations for drying. Also, never use a top loading washing machine for these items. Opt instead for a quick trip to the laundry mat for the closest front loading machine.

Accomplish your backyard carpentry projects with the right kinds of tools. Belt sanders are handy companions when it comes to smoothing out all those rough surfaces on any type of wood. Go for electric powered sanders that are very effective with finishing touches. These types of power tools are so easy to use.

With manual sanders, you use your bare hands to power it and all the surfaces cannot be evenly smoothened out. The change of manual pressure as you sand a wood surface will affect the wood’s symmetry. With a power sander, you can choose the right type of roughness your need for specific finishing jobs.

bandsawThere are different band saws available in the market today.  You really have to know what your particular needs are to be able to choose the best one for your needs.  If you are just a hobbyist and home worker the smaller units are just right for you.  The bigger cabinet models are best for professional use.

Experts will tell you that there are two main features to consider when choosing a band saw.  You need to know the depths of the cut and the throat.  The distance from the table to the upper blade guides is the depth of cut.  The throat, on the other hand, is the distance from the blade to the vertical frame section of the body of the saw.  From these two features, you can decide which saw you will get.

sawstop-table-sawAll woodworkers’ first purchase would be a table saw.  It is one of the most basic pieces of equipment that they will use in their workshop.  You can choose from the three categories in the market:  bench, contractors and cabinet.  Attachments and jigs are also available so you can make more accurate cuts.

You should always wear safety goggles or face shields when operating table saws.  It is also advised not to wear loose fitting clothes that could catch the blades. When cutting small or narrow stock, always use a push stick to avoid getting your fingers getting cut.  And always turn off and unplug the machine when you leave.
